Training Courses

beginner1

This course is intended as a follow-up and builds onto the Adult Beginners course for those who have now accumulated over 14 days of experience in climbing and would like to take their passion to a higher level.

This course can be combined with the MDT Wall Climbing Supervisor Award. Here you are taught to lead climb a sport route from the very basics, how to clip quickdraws, clean the route by tying off at the chains, lead belaying and deal with some rope emergencies such as the rope being too short when lowering a climber from a long climb, coping with knots on the belay line, escaping the system, belaying or being belayed by very different body weight and others.

You also learn to set up an anchor at the top and bottom of the crag using natural anchor points and do personal abseiling. A formal MDT certificate is awarded after this course.

This course comprises twice-weekly sessions over 2 weeks (4 classroom-based theory sessions in total) as well as 3 practical outdoor sessions over 2 separate weekends. The final outdoor session includes the assessment.

All lecture venues are close to Johannesburg and take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
